Bruxy, you did a fine job!
I’m one of those podcasters and if the truth be told I’m getting up there in age too: the beard is a lot more gray than brown. Having said that, I feel I have to respectfully give a bit of a warning here. It was very clear from the sermon that Bruxy thinks very highly of Greg. He repeated that often. And that’s cool, Greg is a fine teacher with many gifts. The danger is that Woodland Hills will be known as “Greg Boyds church”- which is a comment I often hear out here in pixel land.
People need to have a stong sense of buy-in/ownership or they tend to not become involved in a church or they’ll leave after a short while. They need to feel that in some real part it’s their church, the effort of their ideas are at stake, and they make a difference in it. That church just would not be the same if they were not there. They’re part of a movement of God and His kingdom not just sitting in, observing and commenting on a wise man’s sermon every week and then going back to life, leaving the staff/others to do the kingdom work. I don’t know to what degree this has happen, but I feel a need to throw out the caution flag.
Thanks to all you Woodland Hills folks for the opportunities like this to have your say. I know in my heart that you in your life make an eternal difference out there in the world. Don’t ever give up. You don’t have to have all the answers and be a perfectly sound Christian to make a difference. Just be willing to be used by God just as you are. And thanks so much to folks like Bruxy and Greg who put their ideas and self out there every week.

@Neil – Thanks for the feedback! Becoming known as “Greg Boyd’s Church” is something we are definitely aware of. We try to be as intentional as possible at promoting and communicating the “non-Greg” stuff we have here. Honestly, there’s a bunch of ministry gatherings and events that go on at/through WH Monday-Saturday (take a look at the “Ministries” section on this site). All of them are led by staff, volunteers leaders, etc… people other than Greg.
Due to the way podcasts work, our online folks generally hear/see the 45 minutes during the week that Greg is the center of attention. We also realize that for our online crowd, Greg (or the sermons in general) are the main draw and that many folks (living hundreds or thousands of miles away) may not want/need to hear about all our day to day ministry stuff.
I think that the experience is much different for a physical attendee than a podrishioner in that sense.
Basically, it’s something we’re constantly trying to balance :)

@Felipe – Sorry you are unable to use our resources. We’ve talked about trying to do subtitles, but it just has been something we haven’t had the time and resources to be able to pursue.

@Neil: It’s funny you say that because, up here, The Meeting House is often known as ‘Bruxy Cavey’s church’. We struggle with the same issue. It is an easy point of connection for some. Hopefully we can use that to then engage in the meaningful conversation that you wisely highlight (we are the church, not the building or one person, etc.) and then demonstrate that for our respective communities.
