Training Content & Structure

“We want a school that challenges people intellectually, but also spiritually and relationally.”
– Greg Boyd, WH Senior Pastor

Three Areas of Leadership Formation

SOMA focuses on three key areas of leadership formation that are essential in missional-community planting:”

Biblical Narrative and Worldview Formation

Topics include: Understanding the metanarrative of the Bible from a covenant and kingdom viewpoint, understanding the loving character and purposes of God as seen in Jesus, understanding the mission of God’s people, basic discipleship, the church as a missional discipleship community, covenant relationships, peacemaking and reconciliation, spiritual warfare, upside-down kingdom values, and Kingdom justice and compassion.

Personal and Relational Formation

Topics include: Christian spiritual formation and spiritual disciplines, inner healing, emotional maturity, secure identity, spiritual deliverance, Christian character formation, principles of Christian community, one-anothering and mutual ministry, and spiritual discernment.

Biblical, Theological, and Ministry Formation

Topics include: Bible survey, Bible interpretation, basic theology and ecclesiology, church history, ministry in the gifts of the Holy Spirit, principles and practical skills in spiritual mentoring, pastoral counseling, prayer ministry, justice advocacy, evangelism and discipleship.

“People will get deep, rich theology, but also the practical side of discipleship and spiritual formation.”
– Paul Eddy, WH Teaching Pastor

Program requirements

As a result of the SOMA training, Woodland Hills hopes to raise up bi-vocational MDC-planting teams that will form vibrant missional communities where members are being discipled and formed in the same three areas above.

Our hope is that through the ongoing missional outreach of these communities, more and more un-churched and not-yet Jesus-followers will experience the covenant-family of Jesus and become disciples making disciples!

Personalized / Small Cohort Training

Students who are accepted into SOMA will have a personalized mentoring plan designed to meet them where they are at in their personal discipleship, formation, and ministry equipping journey.

This training plan will include some or all of the following:

  • Personal one-on-one sessions (in-person or on Zoom depending on student’s location)
  • Designated video lecture, reading, and writing assignments
  • Participation with other SOMA students in regular cohort meetings (as available)
  • If living in the Twin Cities area…
      • Practicum experience in one of WHC’s Sojourners Missional Communities
      • Missional immersion experiences with local ministry partners
      • Partnering with other local SOMA, Woodland Hills, and Sojourners members in outreach and missional community planting initiative
  • If living outside of the Twin Cities area…
      • Coaching and guidance on missional community participation opportunities, missional immersion experiences and community-planting strategies in your own area
      • Possible “residency” internship in the Twin Cities as schedules and finances allow

At completion of the training period, qualified students will be matched up with other SOMA graduates and/or Sojourners church planters and commissioned to plant affiliate MDC’s of Woodland Hills Church.

The duration and scope of the training period will be discerned based on where each student is at in their current personal, theological, and ministry formation journey.

"I am a podrishioner that just wanted to say thanks for sharing Woodland Hills through podcasts and videos. This is my place to get a spiritual refill, and it’s where I get most of my teaching from. Since I've starting following you four years ago, my view on God, myself and other people has radically been changed. Thanks so much, and keep sharing the Kingdom!"

– Knut-Inge, from Norway
