Showing Up at The Corner Shelf

Posted on

Mark is a long-time member of  Woodland and a recent Corner Shelf volunteer, where he helps us feed over 500 families per week! He says, “I feel like I’m doing my 1.9 cents worth to build the already-but-not-yet kingdom by helping people who don’t have the means to buy enough food.”

Volunteers either “shop,” filling families’ food orders inside the food shelf, or “run,” loading the orders outside into cars. Mark most enjoys being a runner. “It’s fast-moving, good exercise, and gives me a chance to have brief contact with those receiving the food.”

For the past few years, Mark and his wife Sharon have been sponsoring Ukrainian refugees (you can read that story here), so it’s been extra special when some of these refugees have volunteered alongside Mark. He says, “They appreciate so much what people in Minnesota have done for them, and they love to give back and help the community.”

Kinsey Zafke, our Food Shelf and Outreach Leader, says, “There’s an Elizabeth Andrew quote that really applies to The Corner Shelf: ‘Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.’ I know our volunteers lead busy lives, but they still feel called to show up and help serve our community. We could never do this without them!”

As we move into fall, we need volunteers for our 9:30am-12pm Wednesday and Thursday shifts. If you are interested, check out our Corner Shelf volunteer page here!

Thanks Mark and all the others who make this possible. You all are definitely giving more than 1.9 cents worth to the Kingdom 😉

"It's been so supportive to have a journey group leader since 7th grade that I have made a lasting relationship with for 6 years. She has helped me grow in my faith and has been there to check in!"
