Extended Summary:

On this Father’s Day, Peggy Riley preached about the healing power of God the Father through Jesus Christ. In particular, Peggy focused on the release from bondage that God provides to those suffering from generational curses. God’s intention for us is not to live captive to such things, but instead to live abundantly, experiencing the fullness of God’s blessings.

Peggy defined a curse as “a statement or chant spoken against a person to inflict pain or injury and the outcome is great harm or misfortune.” Furthermore, she shared that a generational curse is “ an uncleansed iniquity that increases in strength through the generations and affects all the members of that family and those who come into relationship with that family.”

How does a generational curse happen? Peggy shared that it happens through one person habitually practicing a particular sin, which becomes an entrenched lifestyle thus providing Satan the leverage to exercise control over a person’s mind, will, and emotions. This control will continue through this person’s life and is passed on to subsequent generations.

Peggy exhorted the audience to believe that generational curses do not need to continue. God through Jesus Christ provides the means by which generational curses are broken. She reminded us that to experience the gift of God’s healing power we must confess our sin and repent from it. This means that we must acknowledge the sin in our lives and we must turn away from it. Through the enabling power of God this can be accomplished.

God’s healing power for the body, soul, and mind is not simply an historical occurrence we read about in the Bible, but it is also for today. God lives! God heals! Let us walk with confidence in the light of this reality.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Typically when people hear the word “curse” they think of a statement that has explicit life or death implications. How did Peggy nuance this understanding?
  2. How can you testify to the healing power of God in your life and/or your family’s life?
