Safe, Cared for and Learning about Jesus

Posted on

Heroes Gate exists for kids to know and experience God’s love. Many kids experience that love through the adult volunteers who spend Sundays with them – like Tetyana, who told us about her experience as both a volunteer and a parent.

I have been connected to Woodland Hills for a long time. I first heard one of Greg’s sermons on a CD in 2006 or so, while I was a graduate student at Purdue University! For several years, I followed Woodland as a podrishioner, and then attended in person starting in 2010. I became a Covenant Partner a couple of years ago.

When my daughters were younger, I was so grateful that I could bring them to Heroes Gate knowing they would be safe, cared for and learning about Jesus. During the demanding years of working full-time and raising young children, it was also a gift to be able to listen to the sermon without distractions. As my children grew older and became school-aged, volunteering felt like a natural way to give back and help provide that same gift to other families. I have really enjoyed spending time with the kids, and it was especially meaningful to volunteer while my younger daughter was still attending Heroes Gate, too.

I grew up in Ukraine during Soviet times, so attending church was not part of my childhood. Being part of Woodland and seeing children surrounded by a safe, loving community where they can learn about Jesus, ask questions, and build relationships, is a tremendous blessing.

I see Jesus working in Heroes Gate in so many ways: through the safe and caring community, the support children receive from trusted adults, and the lessons that help them learn what it means to love like Jesus. I especially love our small-group discussions, where the kids talk with one another and consider how the lesson applies to their own lives. I also see how much we, as volunteers, can learn from the children. I often leave reflecting on the kids’ message and how it applies to my own life, too.

Thank you, Tetyana, for serving as an expression of love for both kids and their parents!

"Just a note of thanks. I came across the site, having heard Greg speak in Ireland many moons ago. The church here is a bit jaded, we have found. Groupthink, lack of going deep, fear, perhaps, of facing tough questions. [WH has] great sermons, and not just from Greg. Real food for a somewhat undernourished Irish Christian. Keep it up! Ian from Ireland"
