Is God Angry?

• Greg Boyd

Throughout the Old Testament we get clouded pictures of the character of God. Hebrews tells us that God gave our forefathers many glimpses of the truth. But through Jesus Christ, God gives us the full revelation of the truth. So what are we to do with the pictures that suggest God is an angry, wrathful, violent God? In this sermon, Greg points out various Old Testament stories that are glimpses of the truth of God’s character. With a careful reading that goes beyond the surface picture of the story we see that the greater revelation of the truth that God is a God who is rich in mercy, slow to anger, gracious and compassionate, that God is love. wh-bug

I definitely need to listen to this message more than once. Not just because of the “pace” of Greg’s delivery, but there is, for me, such depth of deep “waters” that I find myself struggling in the current to recognize and grow from the truth and wisdom of God here.
One of my deep water challenges is Knowing and Recognizing God’s motive of Love behind life’s happenings where it is challenging for me to see God’s love as his motivation.
This challenge moves full force to my understanding of Atonement. My past church experience has taught me to see Atonement from the Penal Substitution perspective. This view, as I understand it, means God’s justice demanded payment for mankind’s sin. This then leads me to view God’s motive behind his relationship with me personally and his bride generally,, as Greg says here as vindictive in nature. BUT, praise God, God’s true essence is LOVE, and what God does on the cross through Christ Jesus, is Victory against the source of my Sin, Satan, and his motive is not vindictive, but Redemptive in nature.
Another deep water challenge is that Scripture in 2 Corinthians 11:14, names the Satan as “an angel of light.” Satan understands that I am drawn to God’s created Light, and Satan is able to pretend to be light and deceives me into believing he is the light I am seeking. Woodland Hills is teaching me how important it is to be in God’s Word and to be in Community with other believers in order to help me to discern and know God’s voice vs. Satan’s lies.
Thank you, Greg, for your searching heart, for your wrestling with God for truth, and your passion to share and lead others to greater transformation in and for God’s glory.

Dear Greg! Thank you so much for this sermon! God has given you a gift of gathering the pieces of faith to reconstruct the true image of God. Your message challenges me, but I pray that the Spirit blows away the polluted clouds of lies about God. May God still ignite your passion for him! 🙂

"So many thanks for your wonderful messages and all you give to the world around you. I'm retired in Ecuador with no churches so really appreciate your online presence. So many Christians discourage questions, so this is refreshing, as are the Q&A sessions."
