Political Distortions Workshops

Posted on

During our Political Distortions sermon series, Bill Doherty will be giving two single-day workshops themed around the series. Bill is the co-founder of the organization Braver Angels, and a Woodland Hills attendee and volunteer. You’ll see him around during this series!

Depolarizing Ourselves

Saturday, August 24 from 10:00-11:30am / In Person

A free workshop to help you become more aware of your “inner polarizer” and learn methods for disagreeing with others in love, without contempt and ridicule.

Goals:

  • Become more aware of our own “inner polarizer”
  • Learn how to be critical without demonizing, dismissing or stereotyping large swaths of the population
  • Learn how to lovingly and constructively intervene in polarizing social conversations with like-minded people

Skills for Disagreeing Better

Wednesday, August 28 from 6:30-8:00pm / Online

In this polarized time, we lack basic understanding of why people on the other political side hold their beliefs. We don’t see them as they see themselves–their core values and central concerns. We instead view them through the lens of our political judgments. We are tempted to regard our own side as principled and the other side as self-interested.

Goals:

  • Better understand values and concerns of people who differ from you politically
  • Improve skills for listening in a way so that the other person feels heard
  • More effectively share viewpoints in a way the other person might hear — even if they disagree

"My almost-three-year-old asks every day if we can go to church. Thank you, Woodland Hills, and all the Heroes Gate volunteers for creating such a great environment for kids. My husband and I met at WH six years ago and now our son counts down the days until we get to go again. My heart could burst."
