• Greg Boyd

In this sermon,  Greg Boyd introduces the topic of what it means to be sealed by God. He explains that it pertains to the principle of God’s protection and God’s ownership of his people. We are protected in the sense that God is unconditionally committed to our salvation, we are owned by God because Jesus ransomed us from slavery to sin and Satan. wh-bug

  1. Jerry says:

Greg, a thought on your truck driver friend

    His prayer
Ephesians 2:8-10 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast ….

your point it doesn’t end with boast…. there is a second part

For… we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

I read a book a while back by Daniel Pink: ‘Drive’ – The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us

His idea of Discovering the more you were made for had three parts:

Autonomy – the desire to direct our own lives

Mastery – the urge to make progress and get better at something that matters

Purpose – the yearning to do what we do in the service of something larger than ourselves

How do you work at discovering what you were made for… but keep in sync with the idea ‘not by works, so that no one can boast’

I liked this prayer: ‘Holy Spirit I need you – I can’t you can – do this for me through me’

The kingdom of the heavens is similar to a bit of yeast which a woman took and hid in half a bushel of dough. After a while all the dough was pervaded by it. JESUS

  2. Sarah says:

Why not say “Trust” instead of “Submit” or “Obey”?

  3. jerry says:

Sarah, why not say “Trust” instead of “Submit” or “Obey” is a really good question.

A little history taking, from what I would consider, Greg’s point of view.

Since the beginning of civilization kingdoms have come and gone, old replaced by new.

Each confident in its ability to avoid the misfortune and mistakes of its predecessor.

Rulers etch their names into the annals of time, in the hopes that their descendants will extend their legacy and name forever.

But time has no loyalty. It is a merciless judge, sentencing great and small to defeat or decay.

This is the fate of Kingdoms with the exception… of one – the last one.

However when Greg wrote his book “The Myth of a Christian Nation” a whole lot of folks were offended considering USA was an exception and needed to be combined with this last one.

A lot of us grew up with this Theological template
    . God: created
    . Mankind: sinned
.God sent Jesus: SAVIOR – from sins
.Believe: = ticket to Heaven when you die
    .Don‘t believe: … Hell…

Luke 1:30-33 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called the SON OF THE MOST HIGH. The Lord God will give him the THRONE OF HIS FATHER DAVID, and he will REIGN over Jacob’s descendants forever; his KINGDOM WILL NEVER END.”

John 19:12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. ANYONE WHO CLAIMS TO BE A KING OPPOSES CAESAR .” [NOT religious but political- who has the right to rule]

Jesus MESSIAH, [mashiach, anointed/inaugurated into office one], of the final kingdom invites us to participate in – obey – surrender to.

We tend to see what we are looking for:

Something to TRUST in only a future event or both TRUST future and SUNMIT/OBEY/ FOLLOW now because JESUS is REIGNING NOW.

    So why not BOTH?

"Just a note of thanks. I came across the site, having heard Greg speak in Ireland many moons ago. The church here is a bit jaded, we have found. Groupthink, lack of going deep, fear, perhaps, of facing tough questions. [WH has] great sermons, and not just from Greg. Real food for a somewhat undernourished Irish Christian. Keep it up! Ian from Ireland"
