New Insights or Same Old Nonsense?

• Greg Boyd

Christ’s resurrection is miraculous! The claim that a human being rose from the dead, and is God, is very difficult to comprehend. We’re used to people dying and staying dead. Our culture is looking to new insights and reasons to disprove and disbelieve the validity of the Gospels and the resurrection of Jesus. However, the New Testament Gospels make the claim that Jesus is God, and that he indeed rose from the dead. In contrast to recent discoveries, like the Gospel of Judas, the New Testament Gospels have been proven historically accurate, and have withstood the test of time. Even with all of the historical evidence, we still, by faith, have to make a choice to believe. We can either believe that Christ was a liar or a crazy person, or we can believe that Jesus is God and that he indeed rose from the dead.

Christ’s resurrection is miraculous! The claim that a human being rose from the dead, and is God, is very difficult to comprehend. Death seems so very normal to us.

The New Testament Gospels were written very closely to when the events actually occurred. “Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” (Luke 1:1-4).

Unlike other writings that were written hundreds of years following an event, we can believe that what was written in the Gospels is true and factual.

However, even with all of the historical evidence, we still, by faith, have to make a choice to believe. We can either believe that Christ was a liar or a crazy person, or we can believe that Jesus is God and that he indeed rose from the dead.

By believing in Jesus and in his resurrection, we find out that there is something more than this life. It is a life more beautiful and it extends beyond the grave. The resurrection proves that death doesn’t have the last word. Christ has both conquered sin and death. Through Christ’s death and resurrection, we are no longer separated from God. We have been forgiven and promised eternal life.

Through the resurrection of Christ, we can also have hope in this life. No matter what the trials and circumstances are, we know that these things are temporary. Our life as believers is found in Christ and that transforms how we live today. In Christ, our lives have a purpose and meaning.

Focus Scripture:

  • 2 Timothy 4:3-5

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

"I was inspired during my recent visit to your church, and wanted to thank you for the notable work you are accomplishing in the city. Thank you for being Holy Spirit first responders to the homeless and downtrodden. May God continue to show himself strong as you represent Christ daily."
