  1. Michelle says:

    Excellent. Thank you.

  2. Nicole says:

    What is suffering?

  3. Jim LePage says:

Nicole: Hmmmm…. cryptic question. I guess I’d say anything that causes pain (physical, emotional, psychological, etc.). I’m curious how would you answer that?

  4. Lilly says:

I just recently watched the movie Religulous with Bill Maher. I don’t know if he has honest questions or just enjoys the notoriety of treating religious people with contempt and ridicule for the benefit of his own comedy routine; however, I couldn’t help but wonder if he ever met someone he could talk with who answered his questions or confronted his accusations. We all suffer, and we all have questions that need answering, but being honest about what we know and don’t know has got to be the best way forward in living a Kingdom life and witnessing in this broken world to the hurting and skeptical alike.

  5. Mrs. Linder says:

I felt good knowing you are right…in another words . Every thing starts with disobedience . This is why people are suffering because of disobedience to God. You are teaching the truth. God Bless You

  6. Jim LePage says:

Mrs. Linder – Thanks for the comment! Although there’s no doubt that disobedience to God can cause suffering (the Bible is full of stories that confirm that), I think it’s important to clarify that it’s not always due to the disobedience of the person (or people) suffering.

The way I see it, some people are obedient to God, yet they suffer. Some people are disobedient, yet they don’t seem to suffer. It’s not always a straight forward equation.

  7. Becky says:

Oh my….why do we continue to think we can attain some kind of relationship with Jesus by being “OBEDIENT”?. We are MADE righteous in Jesus..We are “there” already.

  8. Abigail says:

This is quite helpful to me as I had had one of those days where you kind of start thinking I just can’t cope with this &
never well. But the truth is it was my turning to Christ & trusting Him with the problem that has kept me sane at all.
It was nice to hear that we can still do this & focus on His love.

  9. Robert says:

Thank you for this very helpful sermon. I have also read the book “Is God to Blame” and that is equally excellent. In my view, pain is the result of various causes stemming from life’s many possibilities … sufering is how we precieve and respond to the pain.

GBoyd’s perspectives have proven to be very helpful in giving me a scripturaly supported world-view to deal with and begin to understand pain and experience less suffering (because I can perceive and respond to pain understanding God is always with me influening the painful circumstnace with his all powerful wisdom and love).

In my view, I would say “Pain Happens” and suffering is up to us to mitigate. Thanks.

  10. Alan Blaine Stone says:

I listened to this first sermon and I can say after a year of dealing with my wife being crippled after a hip operation, my company going through a disaster, and my youngest son being diagnosed with a heart valve problem — I have come to feel like a modern Job. I’m sure there are a lot of folks like this. The answer I have come to in prayer and scripture is — as you say frequently — God is exactly like Jesus — so when we approach God, He approaches us. When we distance ourselves from God through sin or just lukewarmness, He has not choice except to pull away. So, the things that happen to us are not caused by Him, but they happened during a time when we distanced ourselves from Him. The odds of a sheep getting attacked increase when it strays away from the shepherd, but when staying close He protects. I still don’t have all the answers, but this has helped us tremendously. Thanks for your ministry.
