It’s been a little over a month since the Today’s Harvest free food market opened in our north end. In that first month they have had 8,817 visits, served 450 households each weekday, and distributed 144,853 pounds of food!
Today’s Harvest’s original food market is in Oakdale, and both volunteers and shoppers have been enthusiastic about having a second location in Maplewood, here at Woodland. This additional location provides both convenience and gives Today’s Harvest the capacity they need to meet growing needs beyond what one site can handle!
Kayla Glaraton, Today’s Harvest director, says, “Several shoppers who used to go to our Oakdale market have come here and told us that it is much closer to their house. One woman even said she could walk here in the summer.”
For many people, the concept of a free food market is a brand new idea. Kayla says, “We had a woman last week come in to shop for the first time. After she was done shopping, she came up to our market manager and asked where she had to pay. Our manager told her all he needed was a hug and a smile. She was surprised that she did not have to pay anything and it was a highlight for our staff member.”

I enjoy volunteering at this new Todays Harvest. I attend classes at the YMCA down the street then come volunteer after class 2 times a week.
