August Open Studios

Posted on

This August, a number of Arts Group members met up on Monday nights to discuss the sermon followed by an open studio time for art making.

Some people brought existing projects while others made art based on prompts related to that week’s sermon. Here’s some work made in response to sermons from Testify!

Go. Take. Eat. by Kay Lee Penton                                  Untitled Collage by Lila Diller

I want the words of Jesus to explode
In my mouth like poprocks;
Cracking, sizzling sweetness;
Exotic and alive.

I want the words to soothe
My palette like cucumbers,
Fresh from the garden,
With a smooth, cool confidence.

I want the word to nourish
Like a juicy steak straight off the grill,
Feeding my organs,
Body and soul.

Even with all the sweetness, the comfort, the strength
That enlivens, rejuvenates and fulfills me,
There is an ache and emptiness
That is sour to my stomach,
That I don’t understand –
Yet.

So I will continue to eat
Because He said,
“Eat.”

While August Open Studios has wrapped up, we will be launching a Sermon Response Studio that corresponds to the next sermon series starting on September 7th. We want to celebrate the creativity in our congregation and offer people a chance to process sermon concepts in a new way—by making art! Whether you consider yourself a capital ‘A’ artist or just someone who benefits from kinesthetic learning, all are welcome.

Join us on Monday nights in September and October to discuss the sermon and put those ideas onto the page, the canvas or whatever medium you prefer for self-expression.

Learn more about Sermon Response Studio here, and stay up to date with the Arts Group by subscribing to their email list.

"I have found, in you, a place where the preached word profoundly resonates with my own recent journey of faith and has cemented a new way of thinking, I suppose like jigsaw pieces falling into place. I am grateful that a friend pointed me in your direction."
