There are many reasons as to why people would be wary of supernatural spiritual gifts. Charlatans, sensationalism, manipulation, spiritual abuse, and spiritual arrogance can all give people a negative image of these gifts. The charismatic movement is something people usually have strong feelings about, positive or negative.
However, the Bible tells us not to overreact (1 Corinthians 14:39). Don’t let the abuses ruin the opportunity for God to use these gifts in your life. The problem is not the gifts, but the way they are sometimes misused.
The gifts of the Spirit are there to help us fight in spiritual warfare and to carry out Christian ministry, and we are to desire them (1 Corinthians 12:31). To avoid abuses, the Bible gives us guidelines for using the gifts. They must always be used in love, for the common good, and to promote unity.
